چکیده

In this paper we derive a fourth-order nonlinear partial differential equation modelling the effects of suction/blowing on the evolution of the free surface of a thin viscous film on a porous base. Gravity and surface tension effects are included. The suction/blowing is modelled as an arbitrary function vn(t, r). The Lie group classification method is used to determine a firstorder quasi-linear partial differential equation satisfied by vn(t, r). This equation is coupled with the model equation and solved numerically. New results are obtained which show how the free surface and the apparent contact angle vary with suction/blowing. c © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Instabilities of Thin Viscous Liquid Film Flowing down a Uniformly Heated Inclined Plane

Instabilities of a thin viscous film flowing down a uniformly heated plane are investigated in this study. The heating generates a surface tension gradient that induces thermocapillary stresses on the free surface. Thus, the film is not only influenced by gravity and mean surface tension but also the thermocapillary force is acting on the free surface. Moreover, the heat transfer at the free su...

[hal-00627948, v1] Weak solutions to a thin film model with capillary effects and insoluble surfactant

Abstract. The paper focuses on a model describing the spreading of an insoluble surfactant on a thin viscous film with capillary effects taken into account. The governing equation for the film height is degenerate parabolic of fourth order and coupled to a second order parabolic equation for the surfactant concentration. It is shown that nonnegative weak solutions exist under natural assumption...

Performance of a Showerhead and Shaped Hole Film Cooled Vane at High Freestream Turbulence and Transonic Conditions

An experimental study was performed to measure surface Nusselt number and film cooling effectiveness on a film cooled first stage nozzle guide vane using a transient thin film gauge (TFG) technique. The information presented attempts to further characterize the performance of shaped hole film cooling by taking measurements on a row of shaped holes downstream of leading edge showerhead injection...

Films, layers, and droplets: The effect of near-wall fluid structure on spreading dynamics.

We present a study of the spreading of liquid droplets on a solid substrate at very small scales. We focus on the regime where effective wetting energy (binding potential) and surface tension effects significantly influence steady and spreading droplets. In particular, we focus on strong packing and layering effects in the liquid near the substrate due to underlying density oscillations in the ...

Surfactant spreading on thin viscous films: film thickness evolution and periodic wall stretch

Surfactant spreading on thin viscous films is of interest in the context of surfactant and liquid transport in the lungs, for both normal lung function and treatment of disease, as well as for many industrial processes. This paper presents experimental techniques for the measurement of film deformations due to spreading surfactant and for the investigation of the effects of periodic stretching ...
